“Wonderful colleague AA Azovtseva from the shop artists - Lika Gruzdeva wrote a note on their first meeting. The note was not included in the format of the weekly "Unity/EDINENIE" on November 29, so we are happy to provide it on a site with excerpts of our correspondence.„

Aleksandra Aleksandrovna Azovtseff
Memories of one of our prominent artist s In Australia in honour of her 100th year from her birth.
Aleksandra Alaksandrovna was a true artist though and through, she breathed, talked and thought throughout her life only about her art and creativity.
I first became acquainted with AA at the Russian club in Strathfield in 1977 when we exhibited our paintings in the little “Repin Gallery on the first floor. Pavel Alekseevich Kisliakov who was curator in the gallery at that time invited us to exhibit our work. Her paintings were of the old School when art students were given the thorough training in all aspects of artistic knowledge: colour schemes, compositions, perspective and tonal control were all noticeable elements in her pictures.
AA invited me to her house in Millsons Point just next to the Harbour Bridge of Sydney as we previously agreed to go painting in Neutral Bay.
Upon entering her little old stone cottage one needed to walk through little paths (tropinki) amidst all the paintings in the front room. An easel stood in the corner on which a painting of the Zaparozhtsy was in progress. Even copying a Repin masterpiece AA systematically applied her own colour schemes using bright harmonious color and thick painterly brushstrokes.
Paintings of flowers and portraits were standing on the sides. She greeted me with her cheerful enthusiastic voice and proceeded to describe all the other paintings around the room. Having admired them for a moment, low behold as she led me to the next room which was also full of more paintings and frames. She actually occupied the next house as well.
We sat down for a cup of tea and then collected her material and drove off to paint the Neutral Bay with all the sailing boats and boat sheds.
We all greatly miss Aleksanra Aleksanrovna Azovtseva, her cheerful disposition, her artistic knowledge and her enthusiasm. The three paintings painted by her that I have in my collection I admire and value them immensely.
